Pre-Primary
little stepsFirst Day of Nursery
The first day of Nursery is a big day for the whole family. Some children run in without looking back; many hold on tight and cry. Both are completely normal. With a little preparation at home, most children settle within two to three weeks.
Two weeks before
- Talk about school often and happily: the toys, the songs, the teacher's name.
- Visit the school together and walk past the classroom.
- Practise the school-day routine: wake up, wash, breakfast and leave at the same time.
- Teach small skills: opening the tiffin box, asking for the toilet, washing hands.
On the last evening
Let your child help to pack the bag, with a spare set of clothes and something from home, like a small handkerchief or a family photo. Keep the evening calm and bedtime early.
At the gate
Keep the goodbye quick and happy, and promise a clear return time: "after lunch time" means more to a three-year-old than "at 12:30". Then leave. Long goodbyes and coming back to wave again make it harder. Our teachers are experts at the first five minutes; most children are smiling again within minutes.
Our gentle start
For the first week, Nursery children stay for two hours, then three, then the full morning. A parent can wait in the parents' room on the first two days. Teachers send a photo or a short message on the app, so you can stop worrying.
After school
Ask "What did you play today?" instead of "Did you cry?" Children remember the happy parts when we ask about them.
Parents also ask
How long is the first week?
Nursery children start with two hours a day and move to the full morning by the end of the first week.
Can I stay with my child?
Parents can wait in the parents' room on the first two days. After that, a quick goodbye works best.
What should be in the bag?
A spare set of clothes, a small towel, a water bottle and a light snack. Please label everything.
