Winter Mornings: Keeping Children Healthy and On Time

Health cosy & on timeWinter Mornings

The first cold week of the year always shows up in our attendance register. A few children catch colds, a few more miss the bus, and almost everyone arrives a little sleepy. None of it is serious, and most of it can be avoided with a small change to the morning routine at home.

Start the night before

Winter mornings are won the evening before. Lay out the uniform, sweater and socks, pack the bag and fill the water bottle before dinner. When nothing has to be searched for at 6:30 AM, nobody shouts and nobody is late.

  • Bedtime 15 minutes earlier than in summer: children need more sleep when days are short.
  • Keep the school sweater, cap and gloves on one hook near the door.
  • Charge the parent app phone, so the bus alert does not get missed.

Layers, not one heavy jacket

Classrooms warm up by the second period. Children who come in one thick jacket either sweat through the day or take it off and get cold again at break. A vest, the school sweater and a light jacket can be taken off and put on as the day changes.

For the little ones

Pre-Primary children should have a spare set of socks in the bag. Cold, damp feet are the quickest way to a runny nose.

A warm breakfast, even a small one

A child who leaves home hungry feels the cold more and tires by the third period. Keep it simple: a glass of warm milk, a banana, a paratha or poha, anything warm and simple. Keep a dry snack in the bag for the bus ride if your child cannot eat early.

Keep the water bottle going

Children drink much less water in winter because they do not feel thirsty. Headaches and tiredness in the afternoon are often just mild dehydration. Send warm water in a flask for younger children, and remind older ones to finish their bottle by the end of the day.

When to keep your child at home

A child with fever, a heavy cough or a stomach upset should rest at home and come back when they are well. It helps them recover faster and keeps the rest of the class healthy. Send a short note through the parent app, and the class teacher will share the day's work.

Parents also ask

Does the school timing change in winter?

Yes. From December to mid-February the school day starts 20 minutes later. The new bus timings are shared on the parent app in November.

Can my child wear a cap or muffler in class?

Yes. Plain navy caps, mufflers and gloves are part of the winter uniform and can be worn in class on very cold days.

Who do I tell if my child is unwell?

Send a message to the class teacher on the parent app before 8 AM. For longer absences, a short leave note is enough.
