Helping a Shy Child Make Friends in a New Class

Parenting gently does itMaking Friends

A new class, a new teacher and thirty new faces can feel huge to a quiet child. Shy children usually make good, loyal friends; they simply take longer to begin. A little help at home and at school makes those first weeks much easier.

Don't use the label

"She's very shy" said in front of a child quickly becomes "I'm shy, so I can't". Try "He likes to watch first, then join in." It is just as true and leaves the door open.

One friend is enough to start

Ask the class teacher which child your child sits near or seems to like. A short play date at home or in the park, with just that one child, often does more than a big birthday party.

Practise at home

  • Role-play simple lines: "Can I play too?" or "What's your name?"
  • Talk about what to do when a game is full: wait, or start a new one.
  • Praise small brave steps: "You said hello to Riya today. That was brave!"

What we do at school

In the first weeks of the year our teachers pair new children with a buddy, plan small-group games and seat quiet children with friendly classmates. Clubs and house activities help children find others who love the same things.

When to ask for help

If, after a month, your child still dreads going to school, speak with the class teacher or our counsellor. Together we can work out what is making it hard.

Parents also ask

Is there a counsellor on campus?

Yes. A trained counsellor is on campus every day. Parents can book a meeting through the class teacher.

What is the buddy system?

Every new child is paired with a friendly classmate for the first weeks, to help with routines, breaks and games.

Which clubs help quiet children?

Art, music, chess and the reading club are calm, small-group clubs where quiet children often shine.
