Project Week: What Learning by Doing Looks Like

School Life learning by doingProject Week

Twice a year, normal lessons pause for Project Week. Children work in small teams on one big question, use every subject to answer it, and present what they found to parents on the last day.

One big question

Each class gets a question that matters to them. Class II asked "Where does our water come from?"; Class VII asked "Can our school waste less food?"; Class IX built model houses that stay cool without air conditioning.

Every subject joins in

  • Maths: measuring, surveys and graphs
  • Science: experiments and models
  • Languages: interviews, reports and posters
  • Art: displays and presentations

Teams and roles

Every child has a role: researcher, builder, writer, presenter. Quiet children often surprise everyone when the role suits them. Teachers guide, but the ideas come from the children.

Show and tell

On the last day, parents walk through the classrooms like a science fair. Children explain their work, answer questions and show what went wrong as well as what worked.

Why it matters

Real problems do not come in subjects. Project Week teaches children to plan, work together, find information and explain their thinking: skills they will use long after the exam is over.

Parents also ask

When is Project Week?

Once in each term: in August and in January. The dates are in the Academic Calendar.

Do projects cost money?

No. Material comes from school. Please don't buy ready-made models.

Are projects marked?

They are part of internal assessment, with marks for teamwork, research and presentation.
